Mechanical Design Engineer

Responsible for Mechanical product development, tooling, and analysis related to high power diode-based laser systems. This position requires design knowledge in various areas of Mechanical Engineering including but not limited to: component and assembly design, tooling design, thermal design, fluid design, drawing creation, BOM creation, vendor selection and communication, efficient documentation and presentation, hands on product and tooling assembly; testing.

Duties

  • Design and analysis of Mechanical components including, but not limited to:
    • Mechanical Assemblies
    • Heatsinks
    • Heat Exchangers
    • Medical grade assemblies
    • Military grade assemblies
    • Direct Diode Laser Sources and Systems
    • Tooling
    • Opto-Mechanical Assemblies
    • Electro-Mechanical Assemblies
    • Automation components and systems
    • Automotive grade assemblies
    • Fiber Coupled Laser Systems
    • 3D and 2D CAD design and detailing utilizing Solidworks with ANSI Y14.5M standards for GD&T
    • Present design reviews with clear and effective communication
    • Approximately 50/50 design/hands on product development
    • Assemble and debug prototypes, working closely 
  • 3D and 2D CAD design and detailing utilizing Solidworks with ANSI Y14.5M standards for GD&T
  • Present design reviews with clear and effective communication
  • Approximately 50/50 design/hands on product development
  • Assemble and debug prototypes, working closely with Technicians, Operators, and Engineers of multiple disciplines
  • Create and organize design documentation including presentations, BOMs, test criteria, equipment plans, etc.
  • Analysis of designs using ANSYS and other means to ensure compliance with requirements
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills/Qualifications

Required Skills/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited four-year college or university
  • 3 years’ experience in a related Engineering field with similar duties
  • Experience with Solidworks
  • Capable of working in a cleanroom environment in a full bunny suit for extended periods

Desired Skills/Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with technologies for manufacturing precision mechanical components made from various metals and ceramics in low to medium volume
  • Experience with FEA, particularly ANSYS Mechanical and Fluent
  • Experience with laser systems, including diode arrays, solid-state, and fiber is preferred
  • Some knowledge of optics is highly desired
  • Practical knowledge of ANSI Y14.5-2009
  • Knowledge of vacuum systems and components
  • Knowledge of custom equipment automation
  • Experience in a production environment
